"Reading to the Rescue is an all-volunteer organization bringing rescue dogs to children to practice their reading skills in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Studies have shown that children who read to dogs not only improve their reading skills, but also gain a greater enjoyment of reading.
Many of our dog volunteers are Pitbull mixes and we like to think of them as breed ambassadors. Our human volunteers teach children how to approach a dog, how to pet and safely give treats. Some of our dogs have come from abusive environments, so we also like to emphasize the importance of compassion, adopting a pet instead of shopping for a puppy and spay/neuter in an age appropriate manner." -Pamela Brodsky (co-founder)
